Diamond Certificate: Analyse IGI Report

Introduction to the IGI diamond report:

International Gemological Institute (IGI) is one of the largest Independent Laboratories and one of the trusted laboratories in the world, known for diamond testing, grading, jewellery certificates, and gemstone certificates, etc.

How to analyse the IGI Diamond Report or Certificate?

A diamond certificate or report has every small detail that is required to understand the diamond. These details will help the people who want to buy diamonds, but for that, they need to first understand the reports. What things to look out for. As they look at the certificate, they don’t know how to read it or what things to analyse in it. So, this blog gives you a helpful idea and guidance on how to read the report.

For a better understanding, we are taking a sample of a Diamond Certificate from the International Gemological Institute, IGI.

Let’s start with an understanding of the report:

1. Date

The date can tell us several different things. These details help us to judge the diamond. Is it brand new or graded, which year? It helps in deciding what and which diamond to take. Its not bad to repurchase but only if the Diamond comes back in the best conditions.

2. IGI Report number

Every report has a unique number, and you can also view it from the IGI website. The Buyer can check the authentication of the report which is provided to them.

3. Description

The description provides information about the reality of the stone, like it is a natural diamond, it is CVD or lab-grown diamond, etc.

4. Shape and cutting style

As the people generally take the shape and cutting style as the same but these 2 things are different. The shapes are round, pear, square, oval, etc. There are different cutting styles available, like the Single cut, Brilliant cut, etc.

5. Diamond measurement

When it comes to measurements, Diamond’s proportion and size are explained in the reports. It can be seen that the diamond is close to Ideal measurements, and it will help in making quick decisions just by comparing the mm sizes.

6. Carat weight

The Carat Weight explains the weight of the Diamond. To see the carat table or chart of the carat weight. The weight system is also called in points. Like:

0.25 CARAT = 25 POINTS

0.50 CARAT = 50 POINTS

0.75 CARAT = 75 POINTS

1 CARAT = 100 POINTS

7. Diamond Color Grade

The Colour Grade refers to the type of colour or shades that exist in the Diamond. If you want to understand more clearly about the colour shades.

8. Diamond Clarity grade

The clarity grade shows how many flaws are contained in the diamonds. This is also shown by the chart called Diamond Plot, where the flaws are shown by the marking.

9. Diamond cut grade

The diamond cut grade shows 5 categories:

  1. EXCELLENT

  2. VERY GOOD

  3. GOOD

  4. FAIR

  5. POOR

The diamond cut grading considers factors like table size, culet, girdle thickness, etc. If you wish to understand more about the diamond Cut grades.

10. Polish

It means that the facets of the diamond are smoothly and perfectly polished. If any Facet has been over-polished or less polished or marked with flaws, it can alter light and even make your diamond look less shiny. Light can reflect off these flaws and can create a dull impact.

11. Symmetry

Symmetry refers to how closely the same kind of Facets is proportionate. Like Star Facets should all be perfectly identical; they should all match up and look similar.

12. Fluorescence

Fluorescence means the diamond has a Milky or Cloudy inclusion, which makes the diamond look dull in natural light. Even if that Diamond does not have any Flaws in it, that is a Diamond with white colour and an Excellent Cut. The diamond will glow when kept under UV light.

13. Inscription

The meaning of the inscription here is a Laser Inscription number, which means that the numbers will be written on the boundaries or the girdle of the diamond. With the help of diamond tools, you can see the numbers and identify the diamond correctly. The Laser Inscription for the Diamond Report, as shown, is “IGI…  “.

14. Proportions

The diagram shows the actual proportions of the diamond i.e. table size, width size, and girdle thickness. Etc. This helps us to understand if the diamond is ideal for buying, with the ideal proportion of diamonds.

15. Clarity characteristics

The inclusions in the diamond are shown in the following diagram. The inclusions are shown exactly at the same point in the diagram where they exist in diamonds. This helps to easily locate the inclusions in the diamond.

Conclusion:

However, many other institutions provide diamond certificates like AGS, IGI, GIA, and many others. The reading and understanding of the certificate might be different, but the overall categories will be the same. We will try to explain all other diamond institutions’ certificates as well in some other blogs.
